This a very fine
TATTE MARU GATA
an oval
TSUBA
shape, made of iron, set up for the size of a
TANTO
, a
WAKIZASHI
or a
KATANA.
This design depictes a popular theme of the Three Patriarchs, These three figures are depicted around a jar of
SAKE
.
The design is placed in a lively fashion, the fine quality of the metal, elegance of the flat surface, skillful engraving, and a lobbed general form give the work a feeling of grandeur and authority.
Technique
The
MIGAKI JI
plate is lightly hammered and punched to create the appearance of a rock face, while the surface polished smooth, is sharply carved with accurate details in
TAKAZOGAN
a high relief modelling, with incrustation of gold,
SHIBUICHI
, and the iron of good colour.
The metal has a look of strength, a deep purplish patina and the entire guard has a rustic appearance. In all likelihood, it belongs to the middle
EDO
period. All of these traits make this an unexceptionable work of
MITO
style.

, the Three Patriarchs are known as the founders of the three main philosophies,

These Three Patriarchs became popular subjects of Japanese painting and crafts during the
MUROMACHI
and
EDO
periods. They are depicted together, often in a light manner, to reflect the Neo-Confucian ecumenical doctrine.
